There are certain pieces of fashion advice I’ve heard over the years, which have really changed the way I put an outfit together. Simple fashion tips are great because they really are easy to remember.

They never go out of style and can actually make or break the way you present yourself on a day to day basis.

Here are some of awesome styling tips to keep in mind when getting ready 🙂

# 1 Don’t be afraid to DIY (do it yourself).

Whether it’s tailoring your mom’s old gown or wearing a baggy men’s knitted sweater as a dress, turn pieces that are meant for one thing, into your own thing.

Be creative! You would be surprised how versatile clothing can be.

# 2 Add one flashy item to a neutral outfit.

I tend to throw on a colourful scarf, a statement shoe or a fun bag when I’m wearing something ordinary.

Moreover, it helps me feel more glam and ties everything together.

# 3 Less is more when it comes to accessories.

Although jewellery really adds to an outfit, too many pieces can be overwhelming. I always try to choose 3 out of the 4 jewellery categories (rings, bracelets/watches, necklaces, earrings).

That way, I’m wearing sufficient accessories without overdoing it.

# 4 When you wear a revealing top, cover up on the bottom (and vice versa).

This rule is applicable on an everyday basis. If you’re going out on the weekend, dress as you please.

However generally, if I’m wearing a revealing top, I cover up my legs (as my mom engraved this rule in me since I was in high school).

# 5 Costume jewellery transforms an outfit.

Items like chunky necklaces are always great additions. It plays things up and makes me feel like I took more time to get ready.

Currently, statement earrings are my favourite jewellery to wear because they don’t bother me during the day, but still add an extra touch.

# 6 Don’t underestimate the power of a good coat.

I love a good coat! It’s the perfect remedy to an outfit that needs to be spruced up. I normally  reach for trench coats, long jackets with patterns or bomber-style jackets.

Additionally, you can really have fun with coats, as they change up your look temporarily.

This post is super interesting. I love how original the tips are. I also completely agree with the “less is more when it comes to accessories.” I used to wear a bunch of jewelry all the time. However, I quickly got bored of wearing the same things but couldn’t afford any new pieces ;(.

Therefore, I adopted a completely new approach to fashion where I simply wear no jewelry at all. It saves me a bunch of money and also works toward a timeless minimal aesthetic.

I love the simplicity and like more relaxed classic looks.. I’m 72 and just barely five feet. I wear a size 8 petite . Im more fuller in thighs and legs. My difficulty is finding any clothes that fit right. Talbots works but I like a more chick look. Live In Palm Springs. Modest income and casual lifestyle. Pants/jeans, tops, jackets and sweaters. No shorts or sleeveless. Tennis shoes, sandals, shoes but some walking issues/ balance, fairly fit but no more shoes I like with a bit of a heal. It’s not easy to find clothes. Maybe you have some suggestions. I like the style you present. Thank you, lani
