24 Aug Use The Power of DIY To Make your Wardrobe Unique
Reading time: 4 minutes
I am someone that loves taking items of clothing from my wardrobe and turning them into completely different pieces.
This gives my outfits more depth and personality, as well as allows me to express my style in various unique ways.
Depending on how much DYI you do on an item, it can be pretty cool knowing you are the only person in the world with this piece.
Not to mention, you’ll never have to worry about bumping into someone with the garment. People are also usually impressed when you tell them the story of how it was constructed.
Check out a few of my favorite ways to use my power of DIY on my clothing and how you can create unique pieces too.
# 1 Get creative and wear your clothing differently.

A guy’s XL shirt can easily be transformed into a t-shirt dress. Long jeans can be rolled at the leg to become capri pants and long blazers can be worn as dresses.
Additionally, I own a sweater I wear as a dress because it’s too long to be worn with leggings or jeans.
I wear it with a black slip underneath because it has large slits along the side of the legs. I pair the “sweater dress” with sheer black nylons.
Moreover, it was a fun process finding the right way to wear this long sweater and I was able to bend clothing norms that most people don’t.
It will be noticeable when you add your unique touch to your looks! Others will wonder how you managed to use the item of clothing in a different way than its traditional purpose.

# 2 Don’t be afraid to change up the pieces you don’t love anymore.

Love a dress but not its bow? Snip it off. Own a skirt you find too long? Tie a knot at the bottom. Hate that old t-shirt in the back of your drawer? Cut off the bottom half and part of the sleeves to make it into a vintage crop top.
Change up the old pieces you don’t love as much anymore into something you would be more likely to actually wear today.
Furthermore, you don’t always need to get rid of your older clothing simply because you’re over the item. Make it into a brand new piece instead!
# 3 Turn a new item into the piece you really want.

Occasionally, I find beautiful pieces in stores I feel I can transform into exactly what I really want in my wardrobe. I will either add fabric to the item or remove something I don’t like.
The other day, I bought a transparent maxi skirt. I ended up cutting to be mid length and adding fabric underneath to make it opaque. It’s now my new current favorite skirt I know no one else owns.
Using DIY can really help you curate a closet that you identify with and can help you feel like it is truly only yours.
