AZ: What was your career and background like before starting Mandy’s?

MW: I was teaching ESL in Toronto and Montreal, as well as doing private catering gigs on the side.

AZ: Did you expect the business to be this successful? What triggered the success & expansion?

MW: We never expected the business to be this successful! We are still in awe at how it has grown into what it is today. When we were bold enough to open on Crescent in 2015, things really took a turn for the better.

It gave us confidence to open more locations. With lineups that went outside the door, it was validation that people wanted to eat healthier.

AZ: Down the line, are you planning on adding more things to the menu?

MW: We are definitely not planning on adding other items to the menu other than salads. We always like to stay innovative with our ingredients and our combination of flavours, textures and colours. We don’t want to be a salad, poke bar and sushi place. We believe doing one thing extraordinarily well is the key to success.

AZ: What is it about the Mandy’s brand that people love so much?

MW: People love the feeling when they come in. The decor, the vibe, the customization of your food, the music, the feeling of being somewhat in someone’s warm home all lends itself to a positive experience that people crave. It’s not just about the product, but the feeling you take away as well.

Also, have you tried making a gourmet salad at home? Between the washing, chopping, seasoning, dicing and making a vinaigrette, it’s a real production!

AZ: What are 3 important aspects of a successful business?

MW: Firstly, it takes a story and a need for your product. We were the customer before we started the business. We wanted to eat healthy but no other restaurant was providing this option.

Secondly, a successful business takes trust and respect from your team, as they’re the first customers. Lastly, we really have faith in what we’re selling.

AZ: What is your relationship with fashion?

MW: I love fashion! Especially these days where I can switch it up every day. I can wear urban street clothing with hoop earrings, or I can choose to wear a skirt with Grecian sandals. On another day, I can wear a blazer, skinny jeans and heels. It’s such a liberating time for fashion, as you can dress up or down for just about any event! If you feel great in an outfit, then it’s the perfect outfit for you.

AZ: What do you like to wear to an important business meeting?

MW: I like wearing something that shows yin and yang to a business meeting. I like to mix traditional feminine pieces with masculine items. For example, I would wear a blazer with a colourful silk scarf. There must always be one special piece I’m wearing that pops.

Mind you, I recently had a meeting at a corporate bank and was in a very comfortable sweatsuit. No one batted an eye! As I said, anything seems to go these days, as long as you have a sense of style with what you’re throwing on before you leave the house.

AZ: How often do you refresh your closet and where do you normally shop?

MW: Every season there are usually a few pieces that will ‘appear’ in my wardrobe. This also means the same amount of pieces are donated or paid forward. That’s the rule in our household. I love Aritzia, Editorial, James, TNT and Zara because they always have great finds. I also browse online because it’s always a fun place to shop 😉

AZ: What is something you always carry in your handbag other than the essentials?

MW: Lucas Pawpaw for the best lip balm or cheek highlighter, and ‘magic healing cream’ for the kids’ boo-boos. I never leave home without these essentials.

AZ: What can we expect from Mandy’s in the next few months?

MW: We are opening in Laval in the Fall in Centropolis. We also have our first of two cookbooks coming out in the spring of 2020. Lastly, we’ll have our vinaigrettes in grocery stores everywhere and then we are opening up out of province…get ready!
