Are you always rushing to get out the door in the morning?

Do you often get to work and think “What am I wearing”?

This. is. horrible. Even when you’re running late.

Why?

According to Inc., Research psychologist Jeffrey L. Magee surveyed over 500 firms to assess the impact of dress in the workplace. His studies led to the conclusion that continually relaxed dress ultimately leads to relaxed manners, relaxed morals and relaxed productivity.

Lack of productivity leads to poor performance.

This will only end up hurting your chances of getting a promotion in the future, and can hinder your career from moving forward. Trust me, you don’t want that.

Don’t get me wrong, as a young professional, sometimes you wake up too late and just need to get out the door. I get it.

Who has time to think about how to look amazing every morning anyway?

That’s why, I put together a simple 3 step guide to help you look on point every day, really quickly.

Step # 1 : Start With A Basic.

I preach this rule to just about anyone.

I’m serious when I say the foundation of any great outfit starts with a basic clothing item and/or a wardrobe staple.

In case you’re unfamiliar with the concept of a basic, it is defined as a simple, neutral piece of clothing that can match anything in your closet.

They are the clothing pieces you want to invest in.

Because you’ll be wearing them the most frequently, the last thing you want is needing to replace a basic every couple of months.

If you spend a little more on your basics, you get better value for money and longer wear out of them.

In the case of a young professional, your basic can be your suit.

If you work in a casual office setting, then a neutral pair of pants, such as navy blue slacks or chinos will do the trick.

In case you are wearing a playful suit, or colorful pair of pants, you could also choose your dress shirt or polo to be the basic in your outfit.

Here’s a list of basics all young professionals should own:

A black suit
A turtleneck
A crewneck sweater
A pair of clean black jeans
A pair of chinos
A white dress shirt
A pair of black leather dress shoes
A pair of leather sneakers
A pea coat

Step # 2 : Select A Statement Piece.

Now that your basic is selected, tap into that section of your wardrobe that is more daring.

For example, you can pick out an elegant lilac dress shirt, statement suit or salmon pair of chinos.

Mixing a basic and an editorial piece is the best way to always look fashionable and professional at the same time.

The basic is what makes the look professional, but the statement piece within your outfit is what will make the look current with fashion trends.

Adding one really cool piece to your outfit takes very little effort, but will transform it like you wouldn’t believe.

If you’re more interested in statement shoes, then they can be used as your editorial element within your outfit instead.

For instance, you could wear a solid color suit, white dress shirt and unique dress shoes.

This can also be recreated within a business casual outfit by wearing neutral clothing and an editorial shoe.

Step # 3 : Accessorize.

Top off your professional, fashion-forward look with the best accessories you own.

A few key accessories to wear would be a tie clip, if you’re wearing a tie, a nice chunky metal watch and a pair of sunglasses.

Accessories will make your look that much more sleek and will help pull the outfit together.

As for shoes, it is important to wear a pair that looks clean and modern.

Be sure to refresh your collection every couple of years, as they get worn out very easily.

If you’re not sure what to buy, I recommend you prioritize buying two types of dress shoes: a black pair, for the grey/black suits and a camel pair, for your blue suits.

Of course, owning a cool pair of casual shoes, such as leather sneakers or suede loafers are a must as well.

At this point, about 5 minutes should’ve gone by, and you should be dressed to perfection.

However, your hair also needs to be groomed.

Don’t forget to keep up with your haircuts and to use a pomade to keep everything looking clean and slick on top of your head.

When in doubt, choose an outfit you know you look & feel good in.

We all own a few outfits we love to wear and can fall back on when necessary.

If you’re really stuck on what to wear one morning, pick your favourite outfit. It’s a safe bet that you’ll feel good in.

Just be mindful about not making this a habit.

You don’t want to end up wearing the same outfit everyday just because you can’t be bothered to change things up.

Wearing the same look on repeat equally makes you look unprofessional and as though you don’t know how to dress to impress.
