AZ: How did you get your start in fashion and was your career always set to be in this industry?

EK: I started working in fashion from the age of 16 as a stock girl at BCBG. I then became the best salesperson in Quebec at Marciano and worked my way up at Rudsak until I got to head office. I never thought I would be sticking to the retail industry but this idea came to me and I felt like this was my destiny.

AZ: What made you want to be an entrepreneur?

EK: I didn’t choose to be an entrepreneur, it chose me. Trust me, if I wanted to, I would have worked for somebody else. I took this road because I felt it was mine to take.

AZ: What is your top business advice for a young professional?

EK: The best advice I can give is to do what you love and not what you think you should be doing. Money shouldn’t be your main focus, your passion should be. When you focus on your passion, the rest follows.

AZ: What does it take to run a clothing store like 8lack Official?

EK: It takes a lot to run a clothing store! I don’t even know where to start. Like any entrepreneur, running a business alone takes courage first and for most. I work about 90 hours a week and sometimes even in my sleep. You want to give up at times, especially when things aren’t looking great. However, you keep pushing because of that one client that makes all the hard work worth it.

Financially, the most difficult decision is to let all your side jobs go and make this your lively hood. No one will understand the fear I had when I first opened my store. I used to have 5 side jobs to support myself. I was left with 8LACK to count on, since I had to put 100% of my time into it. The only thing that made me push past my fear was the fact that I had nothing else.

AZ: How do choose which designers you work with?

EK: I usually base myself off of their style and if it fits with what I represent. I like avant-garde, different and creative garments for the store.  Some designers reach out to 8LACK but if there’s a designer I want to work with specifically, I will reach out to them.

AZ: What advice would you give a new clothing store owner to generate brand awareness and sales?

EK: I would say to be creative and to come up with a new revolutionary concept. There are so many retail stores today that we aren’t missing anything. However, creating an experience isn’t as common. Because this is lacking in the industry, that’s where I would concentrate my efforts in the beginning. Also, bring in styles that you like and don’t just follow trends. Follow what you like because that will attract your public.

Brand awareness is also very important. The best brand awareness for 8LACK so far has been word to mouth. When friends or your family tell you to check out a store, it’s the best form of advertisement and trust creation for a brand. As well, you want to be present on Instagram and Facebook, while being creative with your posts.

AZ: Where did the love for the colour black come from?

EK: The colour black came from the fact that everyone is drawn to that colour. It’s professional, slimming, an easy go-to and makes clothing look better. I did my research and found that when there is a sale 2 for 1, people tend to buy the black colour first, followed by grey, white and the rest of the colours.

AZ: What can we expect from 8lack Official in the next few months?

EK: We are planning on opening two more locations here and in Toronto. We are trying to expand slowly and to reach out to more people. We want people to learn about the brand and experience what all our clients can’t get enough of. We truly believe a store experience will never beat online because people need a human connection no matter what business they’re dealing with. Also, discovering local designers and getting custom treatment is worth walking in for.
